It's the economy, stupid.
We were raised during a boom market when every opportunity really was open. This whole belt-tightening and take what you can get, not take what you want...isn't easy to adapt to. Especially since, well, part of it is (and always has been: wtf, revolution against legitimate taxes!) the American mentality.
